Hey ho everybody! Ryan the Art Guy here, with a short but sweet update to begin the monthly release of notable development news! I’ve been happy about our beginning turnout for our mailing list, and I look forward to more folks joining our long journey to building up Cole’s first adventure!
New Enemies
New Enemies are in the works to shake up gameplay and push the variety! Adam the Programmer has taken up the challenge of tackling their funky moves and attacks!
I do what I can to not leave him in the dark about the enemy ideas I suggest. Adam’s put me in the habit of writing down more notes to help out on which sprites are used, timed, and reused.
Even if it’s not required to fit into real Game Boy hardware, I do what I can to adhere to the 8-bit style of limited animation.
If you want to learn more about 8-bit animation, I recommend watching Video Game Animation Study’s “Why Old Games Still Look Great!”
Environment Artwork
For most of November, I’ve been hard at work building a beautiful world for the demo location.
The plan is to have three main spaces to play around and explore in Cole’s expedition for rare treasures to sell in his merchant shop!
From a Deep Forest of high treetops, over a Lakeside of submerged caverns, and into a lost temple full of traps, It’ll be a doozy of a for the Raccoon Retriever!
Holiday Plans
The pair of us are getting busier with our day-to-day lives as the holidays ramp up! I myself had a wonderful Thanksgiving, baking a delicious Lemon Pound Cake! You’ll hear from us again about our 2023 plans around the end of December, and we’ll have more to say about having a new demo ready to hand off to the world!
If you want to keep up with all the game development news and going ons, join the Blackmask Mailing List for monthly email updates! If you’ve already got new emails from us, then we thank you for signing our mailing list and following us along our perilous journey!
