Monthly Update: August 2023

Game Development Monthly Check-In: August 2023

Howdy ho! Ryan the Art Guy here! It’s been two months since a significant update to our development of Blackmask.

We’re still plodding along making this game, but the support that we get whenever we show off the little we have give us gust in our sails. Here’s a new bit of information about we were up to for the past months!

Programming

Adam the Code Guy is fighting tooth and nail for the freetime to work on the enemy ai and behavior. He’s recently made a breakthrough in solving problems with pathfinding bugs.

Now the Foxes and other animals can pace back and forth with little problem. The next course of action is having them patrol the map, seek out Cole and destroy him!

Art

My art duties are coming along as I’m diligently working on this giant bear enemy on my Twitch livestreams. It’s a monumental task that is pushing my animation skills to new heights.

I’ve been learning an iPad app called Pixquare and making sprites for the past two months. It’s a fantastic app even if it lack the features that I use in my main Desktop software, Aseprite.

I wanted to score some small victories and complete a few smaller sprites of NPCs who populate Cole’s world.

Website

With social media on the fritz, and not much news of significance happening beyond my doodles of fancy, I’m pushing to refine this website and mailing list as a stronger information hub of the game. To start, I’ll be in the process of making a Web Manual page to show the controls and movements of Blackmask.

A printed manual has always been in the works and I figured I can knock out two birds with one stone working on both at the same time.Periodically, it will update as features are added, removed and tested for fun, so the page will be a nice read for those interested in cool manual work!

At some later times, I’ll drop in some short bit about Cole’s lore and backstory to keep things entertaining. It’s not gameplay related, but it’s something to do for me.

Conclusion

Thanks for bearing with our silly indie game dev excuses for taking so long on our pixel platformer. We’re hoping to have more important news for the future updates, so thanks again for following our long journey!
